A few words can mean so much.

A few words can mean so much. A His Love Letters envelope on ivory stationery.

Sometimes the person comes to mind before the words do. You know you want to send something to your mom, a friend, or someone you haven’t seen in a while. Then you sit down to write, and the little space for your note suddenly feels very big.

You don’t have to fill it with anything impressive. A familiar memory, a thank you, or a few words of encouragement can give someone something precious to hold on to. What matters is that it comes from you.

Start with the reason they came to mind.

Before you think about how the note should sound, ask yourself why you wanted to send it. Did something remind you of them? Are they beginning a new season? Have you been meaning to tell them how grateful you are?

That is often your first sentence. You can begin right where you are, without a special greeting or a long explanation.

“I made your soup this week, and it reminded me of being in your kitchen. I wish we could sit down and share a bowl together.”

A detail like that helps your loved one step into the moment with you. They can picture the kitchen, remember the recipe, and know that something they shared is still part of your life.

Tell them one thing you appreciate.

We can carry a lot of gratitude without ever saying it out loud. A note is a lovely place to put some of it into words. Think about something this person has done, or a quality you have come to love in them.

Maybe they listen without rushing you. Maybe they have prayed for your family for years. Maybe they made ordinary days feel welcoming when you were growing up. Be as specific as you can.

“Thank you for always asking how I’m really doing. Your kindness has meant so much to me, especially this year.”

You don’t have to say everything at once. One sincere thought gives the person receiving it something clear and personal to return to.

Let encouragement be gentle.

When someone is walking through a difficult season, it can be hard to know what to say. You may wish you could make it better. Your note doesn’t need to explain their pain or tell them how they should feel.

You can acknowledge that this is hard and remind them that they are loved. If you are praying for them, you can say so simply. Let your words make room for the day they are actually having.

“I know this has been a difficult season. I’m thinking of you and praying for you. You are deeply loved, and you don’t have to find the right words to write back.”

Our hope at His Love Letters is that God’s Word brings comfort and draws people closer to Him. Your own words can sit beside that encouragement as a reminder that someone who knows them is thinking of them, too.

Write the way you would speak.

Read your note quietly to yourself. Does it sound like something you would say to this person? Keep the nickname they know, the familiar sign-off, or the little expression that sounds like you.

You don’t need to turn it into a formal letter. “Love you, Mom” may be the most important words on the page. If you are stuck, try finishing one of these thoughts:

  • I thought of you today when...
  • One thing I’ve always appreciated about you is...
  • I wish we could sit together and...
  • This month, I’m praying for you as you...

Give them a little of your everyday life.

A photo can help tell the rest of the story. It could be a family celebration, a walk you enjoyed, or a simple afternoon at home. Add a sentence about who is in the picture and why you chose it.

With a Personal Touch subscription, you can choose a custom photo or an occasion card and include an optional custom note. Make your selection through Monthly submissions in your member dashboard before the deadline for your letter.

Whether you write three sentences or a little more, let the message be clear: I remembered you. I am grateful for you. You are loved by God, and by me.
